Ta-Da…My 1-Month Ampuversary!!

Hard to believe today marks the 1 month ampuversary with which I officially became a Tripawd. What a ride this has been for me, mom, dad and the family.  This 1st month has been very tiring, emotional, and also very fulfilling.  I have been able to spend an amazing amount of ‘quality’ time with dad and my family, assisting me through this very tough time.

Though we have our challenges ahead, I am continuing to surprise everyone and continue to do so.  We started our first chemo treatment on April 5th with Lomustine and I did real well according to dad and the doctors.  We went in for our 7-day post chemo bloodwork and unfortunately my CBC was very low (neutrophil) at 650.  Though not surprising, we were hoping for better 1st time CBC numbers.  My Dr put me on some antibiotics and we are going to monitor the numbers this week and hopefully be on our 3-week chemo schedule.

As well, this week I start my Homeopathic treatment program (once it arrives) from Dr. Loops. We are hoping that it will compliment the current chemo treatments and provide some amazing results. More to come.

As for me, my fur is growing back real nice, my incision is healing  real well and my appetite and activity levels are picking up. Dad takes me for a couple short hops (walks) each day depending on how I feel. He sets me up in the am with my great Ruffwear harness, as I know since he puts that on that we are hoping sometime soon. I love this harness as dad and mom use it to assist me in moving around.

Well, I better sign off as it is Sam-e pill time…mmm, love those smokey meat pill pockets…Tahoe and Dad (Stirling)

One Day at a Time …Day 7 Post Amp

Tahoe just 'chillin' on the floor with my frozen peas and carrots
Tahoe just ‘chillin’ on the floor with my frozen peas and carrots

Hard to believe we are at Day 7 post my Amputation…I continue to amaze my Drs and mom and dad. Though pretty dopey most days due to my drug routine, I am eating all the great home cooked meals dad makes for me. The only thing I try and spit out is that darn garlic dad slips in my meal, as he says it’s good for me.

My incision looks really good and healing really well. I am learning to hop around and navigate the backyard to do my business which has posed a problem or two being a former leg-lifter, now turned squatter. My can hardly wait to get my staples out next week, and then go for a short walk. Dad ordered me a cool red RuffWear harness and my new booties arrived today to prevent slips, trips and falls.

All in all, I am adjusting to life on three. Dad is tired as he sleeps beside me each night in the bed, fetching my medicine and letting me out.

Dad spoke with the surgeon today and he looked a little worried during the call. The three biopseys taken from the amp came back, well almost, as the shoulder lympth node on my am leg was clean (yeah) but two other lumps biopseyed on my amp leg are hystiocytic sarcoma (again..) meaning mets.  We are supposed to start chemo next week, likely lomustine and doxorubicin, but waiting for the word from my surgeon and oncologist.

I will update soon,

The Days Leading Up…

Hello Everyone,

My name is Tahoe (“mytahoe” by another name) and I am a 9 year old male Golden Retriever.

This is my first attempt ever at creating and posting a blog, so I hope you will forgive my clumsy pawstakes as I type away.  I wanted to write down my journey from the time of my initial injury to my front leg, through all the drs, tests, shaving of my fur in many places, to finally my owner having to make a terribly hard decision to amputate my right front leg.  I was diagnosed periarticular hystiocytic sarcoma (PAHS to be fancy) which was found to be localized.

My owner Stirling has been researching day and night trying to ready him and I for the amputation, as I know he feels torn by making the ‘decision’ but I know I will feel better and soon will be running, playing fetch and being my old self again.

My life is not a destination but one of a journey and I want to share life with as many 2 and 4-legged folks I can meet.

So, as I ready myself and my home for my return after surgery on Monday March 18, 2013, I wish everyone the best and a speedy recovery.
